Sausage Ball Ingredients

One of the best parts of this recipe is that it only requires three ingredients. Be sure to scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the page for the full recipe, including all ingredient measurements and directions.

  • Sausage: I recommend using pork sausage for sausage balls because the fat content adds great moisture, but if your family prefers turkey sausage or doesn’t eat pork, turkey sausage can definitely be used. Just know the texture may be a little drier.
  • Bisquick: Gives the sausage balls a fluffy biscuit texture.
  • Cheddar cheese: Be sure to grate your cheese from a block and skip the bag of pre-shredded cheese. Mild cheddar works great, but you can also try other kinds like Colby Jack, monterary jack, or pepper Jack.

How to Make Sausage Balls

Here is a brief overview of how this recipe for sausage balls comes together. Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full list of ingredients and their measurements.

Combine Ingredients in a Bowl

Keep mixing together until the mixture comes together. It may seem dry, but rather than adding liquid, just continue kneading with your hands.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use freshly grated cheese: Grate your cheese from a block rather than using pre-shredded cheese. It will hold up and taste so much better. You can try different types of cheese.
  • Don’t add more liquid: If the mixture isn’t coming together, just keep kneading; don’t add more liquid.
  • Making ahead: These Bisquick sausage balls can be rolled 24 hours in advance and then baked just before you want to serve them. Be sure to store them in the refrigerator until baking.
  • Making gluten-free sausage balls: This sausage ball recipe can be made with gluten-free Bisquick.
  • Dip for sausage balls: Combine 1/2 cup mayo, 1/4 cup spicy ground mustard, 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder for the delicious dip that you see in the photos.

Storing and Reheating Leftovers

Store any leftover sausage balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat only the portion you plan to eat in the microwave, oven, or air fryer until heated through. Always use your best judgment when reheating and eating leftovers.

Freezing Sausage Balls

These sausage balls freeze great! Prepare the sausage balls up to the point of rolling into balls and setting on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Put the baking sheet in the freezer to flash freeze the balls, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container and store in the freezer for up to three months.

When you are ready to cook the frozen sausage balls, bake them in the oven, adding 5-10 minutes to the cooking time. Be sure to use an instant-read thermometer to know when the inside of the balls reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit for food safety purposes.
