Muddy Buddies are one of my weaknesses, and I love making variations on that classic. This apple puppy chow makes for a great fall variation on a favorite.

I am in love with these….what a delicious combo!

Apple Pie Puppy Chow Ingredients

  • Apple Butter: Apple butter is a concentrated, deeper flavored, version of apple sauce. It is made with apples, apple cider vinegar, sugar, and spices. I have a great recipe for apple butter , but you can also find it at your grocery store near the jellies.
  • Chex cereal: Essential for all puppy chow recipes, it is the best for holding onto all the white chocolate and apple butter goodness that you enjoy with each bite. I use corn chex, but you can find the cereal easily in gluten-free varieties which is an added bonus.
  • Cinnamon : Adds a little spice that pairs perfectly with the apple butter.
  • Vanilla
  • White chocolate chips : Traditional muddy buddies use milk chocolate chips, but this variety is best with white chocolate.
  • Butter : I keep unsalted on hand for baking which works great here, but salted will be fine too.
  • Powdered sugar : Start with just 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar and only add in the last 1/2 cup if you are having trouble coating all of the puppy chow.
  • Streusel topping: see more on this below.

Streusel Topping

The streusel topping is what really makes this puppy chow recipe exceptional. While you can make just the puppy chow and it will be delicious, I highly recommend adding the streusel. It only requires three simple ingredients and pairs perfectly with the apple flavor.

Storing and Freezing Puppy Chow

Store any leftover puppy chow in a container with a lid for up to two days. It does not need to be refrigerated. You can also freeze this recipe by putting it in a freezer safe container once it has cooled completely, and storing for up to three months in the freezer.

Ingredients

Muddy Buddies

  • 1/3 cup apple butter
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 8 cups chex cereal I used corn
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Streusel Topping

  • 1 stick of butter softened not melted
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 cup of quick cooking oats

Instructions

Muddy Buddies

  • Heat the apple butter in a small saucepan over low heat. You are doing this to cook off some of the moisture, so cook until it looks thicker, stirring consistently, about five minutes. You will see the streaks of water disappear. 1/3 cup apple butter
  • Remove the apple butter from the heat and stir in the cinnamon and the vanilla until combined. Then stir in the white chocolate chips and return to the heat. Continue stirring until the chips are melted. 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips
  • Stir in the butter until melted. 2 tablespoons butter
  • Pour the mixture over the cereal in a large bowl . Mix until it is equally distributed. 8 cups chex cereal
  • While it is still hot, add the powdered sugar a little bit at a time until the cereal is completely coated. 2 cups powdered sugar
  • Transfer the cereal to two cookie sheets so that it can cool in a single layer.

Streusel Topping

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Mix the ingredients together with a fork. It will be a little chunky, and that is okay. 1 stick of butter, 1 cup of brown sugar, 1 cup of quick cooking oats
  • On a parchment-lined baking sheet, spread half the mixture.
  • Bake the mixture for 8 minutes, but keep an eye on it. All ovens cook differently and you don’t want it to burn.
  • Transfer the mixture (it will be in chunks) to a paper towel-lined plate. Let it cool completely and then break it apart into bite-sized pieces.
  • Repeat with the second half of the mixture.
  • After the muddy buddies and streusel topping have cooled completely, combine them and transfer to a container that can be completely sealed. Best when eaten within two days.
