I am so excited to share today’s recipe with you. If you are a chocolate lover like me, you are going to want to buckle up for this amazing ride.

This Chocolate Chess Pie is incredible easy to make, and it is even easier to eat. Made with a small handful of ingredients that are easy to keep on hand, this is going to become the regular dessert you bring wherever you go.

What is a Chess Pie

Chess Pie is a Southern classic. It typically is made up of flour, butter, sugar, eggs, and milk with other ingredients added to create different flavors. This simple make up of ingredients come together in the best way to make a delectable dessert.

How to Make Chocolate Chess Pie

This is a brief overview on how to make this amazing pie recipe. For the full recipe with all of the ingredients and measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  1. Make a pie crust. While you certainly can use a store bought crust (and will receive no judgement from me), you will fall in love with my pie crust recipe. Read more about it below.
  2. Make the filling. The filling of this pie comes together very simply and with ingredients that are easy to keep on hand in your pantry and refrigerator.
  3. Bake the pie. A chess pie is done when the middle of the pie has a slight jiggle left to it.
  4. Let the pie cool. This recipe for chocolate chess pie should cool completely before you slice it.

The Best Pie Crust

This chess pie is certainly amazing on it’s own, but it is pushed right up over the top with this fantastic pie crust. It is made with a secret ingredient – vodka! The vodka, though just a small amount, works together to pull the dry ingredients together, and then evaporates during baking. This leaves the perfect flakey pie crust.

I call this a fool proof pie crust. And, without a doubt, if you follow my step by step photos, you will be able to make this crust and wow just about everyone.

What is Evaporated Milk

Evaporated milk is cow’s milk in which about 60% of the water has been removed from the milk. In some parts of the world it is labeled “unsweetened condensed milk.” It is shelf stable and you will find it in the baking aisles of grocery stores.

Storing Chess Pie

Given that this chocolate chess pie recipe contains eggs, milk, and butter, it should be stored in the refrigerator. After the pie has cooled to room temperature (about 2 hours), cover and store in the refrigerator for up to four days.

Yes! Please see my instructions above for refrigerating.

This amazing pie recipe tastes a lot like a decadent brownie, but moist, and perfect in pie form.

If you give the pie pan a very slight shake and the middle has a little jiggle left to it, the pie is done.
