How to Make Garlic Bread
This is a brief overview of how to make the best garlic bread recipe. For the full recipe with all of the measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Prepare the bread. Cut the bread in half length wise.
- Make the topping. Mix together melted butter, fresh garlic, and kosher salt.
- Put it together. Spread the garlic butter mixture over both halves of the bread. I like using a pastry brush for this. Sprinkle with fresh parsley.
- Bake it. Put it under the broiler for 2 minutes, watching closely.

Bread to Use for Garlic Bread
When picking out a loaf of bread to use for making this recipe, you want to get something that is generally pretty soft. Hard baguettes aren’t really want you are looking for. You want a long, 16 ounce, piece of white bread. This is often labeled as French Bread or Italian Bread.

Salted vs. Unsalted Butter
Most often, I’m using unsalted butter in my cooking. It allows me to control exactly how much salt goes in the recipe, as the salt content in butter varies from brand to brand. In this recipe I’m calling for unsalted butter and adding in some kosher salt.
If you have salted butter in your refrigerator, you can use that and just omit the kosher salt.

Serving Garlic Bread
Our favorite way to eat garlic bread is dipping it in spaghetti sauce . My homemade recipe is perfect for that. If you are making a meal that needs spaghetti sauce – like spaghetti and meatballs – I suggest doubling the recipe. You will have plenty for your pasta, enough for dipping, and the leftovers will freeze perfectly. We even have a crockpot spaghetti sauce recipe if that makes life just a little easier.

Substitutions and Variations
- Swap the parsley for basil. If it is the summer months and you have fresh basil growing on your back porch, you will love swapping the parsley for it.
- Add some Parmesan cheese. Right after the bread comes out from underneath the broiler, throw some finely grated Parmesan cheese on top.
- Add Mozzarella and make cheesy garlic bread. Follow the directions as written, but leave off the parsley. Then top the bread with 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese. Bake for 10 minute at 400 degrees and then turn on the boiler for 1 to 2 minutes.
Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Keep in mind that you will enjoy your garlic bread the most, the first day it is made. Store leftovers, once cooled, in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
- Wrap the garlic bread in aluminum foil.
- Place on a baking sheet in a 350 degree oven.
- Heat for 10 to 15 minutes.
