I love spritz cocktails. They have the crisp taste of champagne or Prosecco, but also additional delicious flavors. They are light and refreshing, and so delicious! This Hugo Spritz is no exception. You will love this delicious summer cocktail.

Hugo Spritz Ingredients

A spritz cocktail, like the Aperol Spritz , is composed of a liqueur, Prosecco, and club soda typically in a 3-2-1 ratio. The result is a light, bubbly, and refreshing cocktail sure to quench your thirst. The Hugo Spritz features St-Germain, an elderflower liqueur.

  • Elderflower liqueur: The star of the cocktail, this sweet and unique liqueur has strong floral notes. St-Germain is a common brand.
  • Sparkling wine or Prosecco: Read more on this below. Open your bottle just prior to making your Hugo Spritzer to keep the bubbles fresh.
  • Club soda: Any unflavored sparkling water will work for this recipe. It adds some extra carbonation and dilution.
  • Mint leaves: Fresh mint leaves are slapped and added to release the flavor and aroma, like in a Mojito .
  • Mint sprig and lime wedges : These are optional but add a refreshing garnish to the cocktail.

How to Make a Hugo Spritz

This refreshing St-Germain spritz comes together right in the glass you will drink it out of. For the full recipe including all measurements, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Slap the mint . Slapping fresh herbs is a great way to help them release their flavors. Place the mint leaves in one hand, and then slap them with the other. Add them to the ice filled wine glass.
  • Add the elderberry liqueur. We are using St. Germain.
  • Add sparkling wine. You can use whatever sparkling wine you prefer most.
  • Top with club soda. Top the glass with club soda, see more on adjusting your cocktail below.
  • Garnish and enjoy. A mint sprig and a lime wedge polish off the drink. Enjoy right away while it is cold.

Sparkling Wine vs. Prosecco

The type of sparkling wine you use is totally up to you. I would recommend something on the drier side since you are also using a sweet liqueur in this cocktail. If you like very sweet drinks, get any sweet sparkling white wine or Prosecco that speaks to you. Open your bottle of wine and your club soda just prior to making the drink to keep the bubbles fresh.

How to Serve

Serve your Hugo Spritzer with lots of ice. Mint leaves add flavor and a mint sprig dresses up the cocktail. Lime wedges add a refreshing citrus balance to the other ingredients.

Adjusting The Sweetness

The main thing that will affect the sweetness in this Hugo Spritz recipe is the sparkling wine you choose and the ratio of the ingredients. If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, use a sweeter Prosecco or sparkling wine or add a small amount of Simple Syrup . Here are other ways to adjust your cocktail:

  • To make it more mild , add less elderberry liqueur and more Prosecco.
  • To make the cocktail less boozy , use less Prosecco and more club soda.
