If you are planning on celebrating St. Patrick’s Day but green beer doesn’t really do it for you, let me introduce you to this fantastic cocktail. The Irish mule is a super simple twist on a classic cocktail, the Moscow mule. In this drink, we are simply swapping the vodka out for some Irish whiskey. The result is a delightful cocktail that I might like even more than the original.

Irish Mule Ingredients

Only three ingredients make up this Irish mule cocktail. Be sure to refer to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full recipe and measurements.

  • Irish whiskey: At the heart of the Irish mule, Jameson Irish Whiskey takes center stage. Known for its smooth and mellow character, Jameson brings a balanced blend of sweet and spicy notes.
  • Ginger beer: The bubbly nature of ginger beer ensures a refreshing and lively kick to the cocktail. You can find ginger beer in alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties. I share more about this below.
  • Lime juice: Fresh lime juice is recommended for the vibrant tangy flavor and overall freshness it adds to the cocktail.

Ginger Beer For Moscow Mules

When it comes to selecting ginger beer for your Moscow mule, there’s a choice between alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties. The presence of alcohol doesn’t impact the quality of the drink; it’s simply a matter of taste. Always check the packaging to ensure it aligns with your preference for an alcohol-free option. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Crabbies stands out as a fantastic choice, adding a delightful blend of flavors with an alcoholic twist. Another excellent option is Sprecher Hard Ginger Beer.
  • Swap ginger ale. If you prefer a lighter and sweeter alternative or are unable to find ginger beer, use ginger ale.

Copper Mugs

While Moscow mules are traditionally served in copper mugs, they’re also incredibly enjoyable and keep your drink refreshingly cold. Copper is an excellent conductor of temperature, so when a Moscow mule is served in a copper mug, the metal quickly takes on the cold temperature of the drink, providing a frosty touch with each sip. It also provides a level of insulation which helps keep your cocktail colder longer.

However, if you don’t have a copper mug handy, a small tumbler works just fine. I’m not one to strictly adhere to the rules when it comes to savoring delightful cocktails. Cheers to enjoying your drink, no matter the vessel!
