Growing up, one of the most coveted treats was an Orange Julius from the mall. It was such a dream, that I remember my mom telling me before leaving the house we would not be getting one. She had some skilled tantrum-prevention game. Little did I know that I could make a nutritious substitute at home that would be just as delicious.

With just orange juice, an orange, banana, and milk, you have a delightful smoothie that makes for a great treat or snack. It is like an orange creamsicle smoothie. You can even add protein powder to make a great breakfast option.

How to Make an Orange Smoothie

Here is a brief overview of how this orange juice smoothie recipe comes together. For the full recipe including all measurements, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Combine all ingredients. Add your orange, orange juice, frozen banana, and milk to the base of your blender. I share my favorite blender below.
  • Blend until smooth. If it seems too thick, add another splash of milk or water.
  • Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Sweetness of Bananas

The sweetness of this smoothie comes from the orange, orange juice, and the banana. But it is worth noting that how sweet your banana is, which makes up a bulk of the sweetness in this smoothie, is greatly dependent on how ripe it is.

An underripe banana will be far less sweet than an overripe banana. This is the reason that you use overripe bananas in banana bread . That being said, the more ripe the banana, the more of the banana flavor you will taste. An underripe banana is almost undetectable in a smoothie like this. So consider balancing your desire for sweetness with how much you like the flavor of banana.

Add a scoop of vanilla or unflavored protein powder to give this smoothie a boost of protein. You could also add a scoop of high protein yogurt or Greek yogurt.

Orange Smoothie Variations and Substitutions

  • Use any milk you prefer: Dairy or dairy-free like almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk all work great in this recipe.
  • Add sweetness: I don’t think this smoothie needs any additional sweetness, but occasionally my kids do. This is especially true if the banana is on the less ripe side. Honey and maple syrup both work really well as a sweetener in smoothies.
  • Boost the orange flavor: If you want an even more intense orange flavor, I suggest adding a teaspoon or two of orange zest in addition to the orange.
  • Add more fruit: If you want to change this smoothie up, adding additional fruit can be a really great way. Add in strawberry, some raspberries, or some blueberries to change it up.
