Slow Cooker Chicken Ingredients
Just four simple ingredients are needed to make this pulled BBQ chicken sandwich recipe. Be sure to scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post to see the full recipe, including all measurements.
- Root beer: Adds sweetness to the chicken and helps to tenderize the meat as it cooks. You can also use Cola.
- BBQ sauce : I have a very easy recipe to make BBQ from scratch, but a bottle of your favorite brand will work in this recipe, too.
- Chicken: Boneless chicken breasts get so tender in this recipe. You could also use boneless skinless chicken thighs or even pork to make BBQ pulled pork.
- Corn starch: Helps to thicken the sauce and stick to the chicken.

How to Make BBQ Chicken in the Crock Pot
Here is a brief overview of how this slow cooker BBQ chicken recipe comes together. For the full recipe, including all ingredients and their measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Combine the root beer and BBQ sauce. Whisk them together, then pour them over the chicken in the base of your slow cooker.
- Cook the chicken. Cook on low for four to six hours.
- Make sandwiches. Remove the chicken breasts and shred them. Then whisk the corn starch into the sauce in the crock pot. Return the chicken to the slow cooker and stir to make sure all of it gets completely coated with the sauce. Serve your shredded BBQ chicken sandwich on a pretzel bun.

Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Store any leftover BBQ chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat only the portion you plan to eat in the microwave or on the stovetop. Always use your best discretion when reheating and eating leftovers. You can also use leftover BBQ chicken to make some of these delicious recipes:
