One of my husband’s very favorite cocktails is the Vodka Gimlet. He limits himself to about one per year at the most, and because of that, I knew I had to master the recipe.

This very simple recipe is made with just three ingredients. Because of that, the ratios have to be spot on, you need to use quality vodka, and the lime juice should be fresh. And of course, you need the best Simple Syrup Recipe . With that, you have our amazing vodka gimlet recipe that is the perfect Friday night treat.

Vodka Gimlet Ingredients

There are three ways people go about this gimlet situation. You’ve got the crew that swears by Rose’s Lime Juice, which is a sweetened concentrate. Then there are the folks who whip it up with a lime-infused simple syrup. And of course, there’s us, opting for fresh lime juice and simple syrup to hit that sweet-and-sour sweet spot.

  • Vodka: The primary spirit in a vodka gimlet. It’s recommended to use a high-quality vodka for a smoother and more enjoyable drink. This isn’t a cocktail to use low-quality vodka; it will really make a difference to use a top-shelf option. Read more on my recommendations below.
  • Lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice is key, offering a zesty and citrusy flavor. The acidity of the lime juice adds a refreshing element to the cocktail. Some variations may use lime cordial or Rose’s Lime Juice, but a fresh squeeze provides a more vibrant taste which is what we opt for.
  • Simple syrup: Adds just enough sweetness and balances the tartness of the lime juice. Read more on making simple syrup at home below.

Homemade Simple Syrup

Simple syrup is made by dissolving equal parts of sugar and water, creating a liquid sweetener that blends seamlessly into the cocktail. It is great to keep on hand for sweetening your favorite cocktails, including this gimlet with vodka. While you can buy a bottle of simple syrup, it is so easy to skip the store-bought stuff and make your own.

How To Make a Vodka Gimlet

Here is a brief overview of how this simple vodka cocktail comes together. For the full recipe including all measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  1. Combine ingredients. Add your quality vodka, fresh lime juice (strained), and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker with lots of ice.
  2. Give it a good shake. Shake the cocktail shaker vigorously for at least 20 seconds. You want the ingredients to be very cold and well combined.
  3. Strain into a glass. Serve with lots of ice. Garnish with a lime wedge (or two) and enjoy!

Vodka Recommendations

As mentioned above, because this is a very vodka forward recipe, you want to make sure that you use a high quality vodka. I would recommend Grey Goose or Belvedere. If you are on a budget, you might want to try Costco’s Kirkland brand vodka. It often beats high end vodka in blind taste tests, and it is rumored to be a high quality vodka that is sold under the wholesale label.

Making A Gimlet With Gin

While the classic gimlet is made with gin (and I do love gin) I prefer to make my gimlet with vodka. There is a solid 2 1/2 ounces of vodka in this drink making it more than half of the drink itself. So, it is important to grab a top-notch vodka, something smooth enough to sip solo.

Fancy drinks are amazing, but sometimes you just want the classic. Here are a few I think you’ll love:
