This Whiskey and Wine cocktail combines two favorites into one rich tasting drink. If you love red wine and whiskey, there’s no need to choose. Put them together in one classy cocktail!

This Whiskey and Wine cocktail first came to be when I received a bottle of whiskey as a gift from a dear friend. In the process of thanking her, I asked her (as a joke) if she thought you could combine red wine and whiskey.
She gave me an enthusiastic YES! Turns out she had a martini made with simple syrup, red wine, lemon juice and whiskey in Milwaukee years ago and loved it. What she was describing is known as a New York Sour. It has just a splash of red wine at the top, but that wasn’t enough for me.
The result was my own spin and this amazing Whiskey and Wine Cocktail. It sounds like a super random mixture, but it is absolutely delicious. This is genuinely one of my favorite cocktails.

Whiskey and Wine Cocktail Ingredients
- Red Wine: I used a blend, but you can use any kind you like, just aim for something that is a touch drier like a Cabernet.
- Whiskey: Use a high quality whiskey for this cocktail. My favorite is Knob Creek. I think it is the best quality for your money.
- Lemon juice : While I always encourage you to use freshly squeezed lemon juice in your cocktails (it just mixes in better and doesn’t seperate), if you are in a pinch, use the bottled.
- Simple syrup : If you’ve never made my simple syrup recipe, try it! Easily made in a snap with just sugar and water , you will use it in a million different cocktail recipes. It makes anything more smooth, sweet, so good!
How to Mix and Serve
Unlike the original, the New York Sour, which does a beautiful float of wine on the top of what is essentially a Whiskey Sour , this recipe is mixed and combined in a mixing glass and then poured into coup glasses. To up the fancy a little, garnish with a lemon twist.
To make a lemon twist:
- Cut a slice off of a lemon.
- Cut a slit in the slice.
- Carefully open from the slit and then pull out the pulp, leaving the peel and a small amount of the rind.
- Twist the rind into a curl and place on the edge of the glass.

Other Whiskey Cocktails
Love whiskey as much as me but not sure what to serve with whiskey? Here are some great ideas:
- Whiskey Smash
- Old Fashioned
- Manhattan
